Divineevil06. South Africa is a country rich of culture and natural wonders. However, in recent years there is a decline in the number of nurses due to the very similar picture in the Phlippine setting, brain drain due to poor sustem and low remuneration. It was noted that African nurses and doctors are among the highest in number ca[pable of emigrating. Nursing licensure is a surefire step for practice in the African health care system, as with other internbational boards and councils.  However, I can't find anywhere in their site that speaks about international nurses accepted for licensure and examinations.

I do not see any bright future in South Africa in as far as my knowledge is concern. Might as well consider applying in any other European nations.  I have a close friend, got married with a SA doctor, She is now living in South Africa. Everytime we chat, she always say that life in Philippines is far better than in South Africa, and work-wise, Middle East is much better.

And also, I know plenty of south africans in my workplace. They are always complaining that the cost of living in their country is way up the ceiling.  In fact, there are lots of SA nurses  coming over to Middle East in search for good career simply because they can hardly find a good paying job in their homecountry.  With this, I do not see any good sign for one to consider nursing in SA.

NOTE: Just my humble opinion.

This kind of reminds me of my Godmother and my mother's close friend.

She spent a good amount of her life as a nurse in London but spent her last 10 years or so before retiring as a nurse in Saudi Arabia.  All throughout her work in Saudi Arabia, she was maintaining her mortgage in London, specially since she is a permanent resident there already due to her many years of stay and work there.

She claim that her take-home pay plus the other benefits she gets by working in Saudi is better than if working as a nurse in London.  She retired from being a nurse a couple of years ago but retired back in her London home w/c she was able to complete paying off her 30 year mortgage just before retiring as a nurse in Saudi Arabia.

Cost of living and other factors such as taxes and benefits plays a good role on one's over-all take-home pay and take-home pay is everything considering everything else is equal.

Before someone can mis-interpret my post above, take-home pay is only impt. if we consider every other factor as equal.

Take-home pay is by no means the sole driving force of any decision.

I have heard of many stories of foreign nurses in the US choosing to transfer to another hospital or even to another State even if it will result in a cut in pay.  The major reasons? They would rather take a slight pay-cut or a lower take-home pay if it would mean they would be happier with that hospital or State compared from their previous ones.

A more friendly, supportive and more welcoming environment trumps everything.

Very well noted  t-cell and the coolest mentor, nurseidol. True indeed that at these trying times, we sure do like to see what else is there in this world. Our search bring us far and wide,  yet again, we must not forget to see both sides of the coin before yielding our end. Suffice it to say, it is vital to keep an open mind, to what is going on, to what is being said before making our luck. . . . .  And there we go.   :)

Thank you so much divineevil for sharing that. I have a friend who has been asking me to apply with him in South Africa. It's not really the economy that he's after but the place - the jungle safari and the very simple way of living. I'm aware that the eco there is quite not good as of today and that there are new viruses which arose fom there but what we're after is not really the income but the adventures and the different encounter with the other world

Very well said.  Please update us here if you and your friend takes the jump.  Maybe even convince some nurses to apply as well.

Please update everyone here as well on the proper procedures.  Best of luck. angel
