Flauting youre position to Humiliate or discredit ??..... a Philippine Setting !
Hi guys...it's been a long time since I've shared my views here.. I know this is the best way to share grievances..atleast for me...because I find people here very objective and analytical in approaching different issues of concern in the Nursing World.... I'd like to know your views after kindly please...
I've recollected things.. and some parts of me are dying for justice and the other would be warning to all Floor nurses......
I was on duty on a different floor this Afternoon.... and one of my patients have this drug called nerogen. a hematopoietic drug...ordered to be delivered subquetaneously 4,000 units.no specific site was stated. thats 1ML as clearly stated on the instruction manual..As an abiding nurse I did according to the time given and the route required ..Ive used a tuberculin syringe with a fine needle to hit the SC and did .. and so on even explained!!!.VERY slowly.. I delivered it on the abdomen SC of my patient I was even thinking of preparing icepack to put after..an ideal method.. but the doctor advised it would be fine...and personally ive delivered the drug before..but on a different brand..and prepared syringe ready to be given...nothing harm nor reactions from the patient's afterward..later that afternoon before my shift ends..her daughter came forward to the nurse station asking and complaining heavly why the drug was given on the SC abdomen of her mother..Luckily for me.. all the resident doctors were at the station and we had one IM consultant
..she deliberately pointed out that it was something to be corrected..in loud voice she complained!!!..with her was a lady about her age and intruduced to us as her sister-in-law whom she told us a nurse too... She complained that it was expected that I should have use the syringe that was available on bedside...The syringes was for a 3 ML dose and the needles were G24 and should be delivered on the buttocks... The lady/nurse without being asked said she was a Nurse in this certain goverment hospital and SC for that should be delivered on the buttocks..Ive reason out that Subquetaneous tissues are not exclusively on the buttocks but on the Abdomen as well... and that those syringes and needles they have,,, are too big for their mother....If that was the case I would gone to an IM route already and on the buttocks??!!(duh! ) All heard the conversation even the doctors...and the funny thing was the Nurse/ Lady said she IS A HEADNURSE !!! we don't see the point of her outburst !!??? telling us who she was.. after my clear explanation...the so called nurse left...but the other daughter continued to voice out her concern...I believed she was made to believed that Sc are exclusively on the buttocks??? no matter how clearly i said and explain things.. she keeps finding minute error and so on.. that were answerable !!! later I found out that they will already on excess and I wonder why she was very apprehensive when I made a transcription for the meds to buy for their supply.... and so the worst things she said.. was her sisters and so on are nurses abroad .. (Well that's nothing new my family too are medical professionals in the US and other parts of thw world) and only she was in Goverment treasury as a HEAD !!!?? WAS that A threat or a humiliation to end with????
After that incident... the nurses on the station felt badly for me.. and that if they weren't so busy they would have said...back at her!!! but during that time.. i was so kind and pleasantly answering her queries.She even cited that this matter shouldn't reached the administration..but Ive open that issued to her and welcome that ..I was very courageous telling her to do that !! (frankly I was a bit scared but I feel if that was the case..investigations will follow and I have nothing to be afraid of because I've done the right thing!!!) .
The doctors were angry Why she have included other details such as US nurses or that nurse/lady who have mentioned her position of this certain hospital....thats besides the point!!! and they don't think there is anything wrong??.. a good and knowlegable nurse knows where SC site are found and that is where the drug should be...as they said,,
The irony.............. before I left ..my foreign client (an american) thank me for checking on him..while her wife was away,,, and another called me up to just to say thank you for my services and that advise I gave him... about psych drugs.. for her daughter ...toink??!!
REALIZATION !!!
number 1: Some patients or Significant others are very much apprehensive and ill mannered especially when their bills hit the celling ,.,.. and find more errors.. even awaiting...which are insignificant at times.. Compared with other patients' Significant others who trurly are rich by the way!! and can pay ( who are very generous even to all the staff and grateful for their services)... the worst part they pretend to be aristocrats and treat nurses as their Chimas! or Maids...Why is that ??
number 2: Does Status bring anything if behind that was a bad/ poor knowledge of SC?? I mean old school no ofense taught them so much that they know only what drug ...should be where and stick to that rather knowing the exact information should be and act on it....
number3: flauting US based relatives to back you up.. wouldn't change anything Do we commonly use this excuse to prove a point stronger??? I mean conmplain if you have too..but do away with details not
Tonight ..I have told my family never to flaunt or brag in any manner That I'm a Nurse and use that against others without any point to prove!!!..

Funny story. Thanks for sharing. It's also nice to hear some real hospital setting stories once in a while. I can emphatize with what you feel. Somehow, it will really bug you even if it's already finished.
It seems like the one who shouted at you has a psyche problem. hehehe! I had been in a mental setting and lots of the patients there are either deppressed having a very low self-esteem or a superior one, thinking that he's better than anybody else. WHen you confront them after their condition become better, they'll say they cannot control it. They have the type A personality, highly competive and agressive. When their condition attack, it gets worse.
Being a professional, we must get used to this as there are really people that are like that and it's not just on the Philippine setting. Flauting positions to humiliate and discredit happens to all not just to nurses. I had seen a foreigner before arguing with a doctor and telling his doctor that he's nothing and just a wimp and that there are lots of great doctors in his native land. He said he's a manager in a certain company. The man got mad just because he's asking for a permit that his doctor won't allow him for his own good sake. I bet call center agents, flight attendants, crews and some others also feel that some people they encounter in their work place also treat them as "utusan, chimay, problem receiver" too.
I also heard stories that many foreigners are more arrogant than Filipinos.
Reychz, what you heard that at many foreigners are more arrogant than Filipinos is a little tell tale. Because I know (not heard) otherwise. Though I can truly say there is something in anyone anywhere but people different from us Filipinos are actually sweet and nice(r), except , of course when one is ill, inside and out.....
Sorry for generalizing. Not all, I mean some of them. As what i heard from my folks based on their experiences even on the outside of their workplace.

Yep, that's one thing that all nurses should do. In fact, that should be a given. Those people who gave you a hard time would find out soon enough that karma is a bi+(#. LOL
